Carters Lake
This scenic lake has 3200 surface acres and measures more than 450 feet deep in some areas. The Carters Dam is the tallest earthen dam east of the Mississippi River. The lake shoreline has no private docks or developement along its 62 miles of natural shoreline. Recreational opportunities include.camping, fishing, boating,mountain biking, hiking & hunting.

The Cohutta's
Just 10 miles from the town of Ellijay in Gilmer County lies the Cohutta Widlife Management Area. The Cohutta Area has provided many outdoor enthusiasts and recreationalists alike with an unforgetable eexperience in nature. The rugged, mountain terrain lures campers,hikers,mountain bikers, trout fisherman and photographers from all over the world. Along the forest service roads and trails are an abundance of mountain vistas. Mountain bikers enjoy the high mileage of trails and the ability to link many different trails systems; while hikers do the same and journey onto some of the HIKE ONLY trails which provide more solitude. The easy access off of Gates Chapel Rd. will prove to be a great junction for some of the most popular trails in the state. These trails are the Pinhoti Trail, Bear Creek Trail, and Mountaintown Creek Trail.Local creeks like Mountaintown, Bear and Holly Creek provide excellent trout fishing for anglers
There are many campgrounds and cabin rentals opportunities locally. The Cohutta area is a wonderful place for outdoor recreation that lies just 20 minutes from the local shops in downtown Ellijay. 
The Cartecay River
Located 5 miles from Ellijay is a popular section of runable river on the Cartecay River. The Cartecay stretches over 19 miles from Tickanetly Creek to the Ellijay River. The Ellijay & Cartecay River come together to form the Coosawattee River which is the main feed into Carters Lake. Most paddlers start their trip by putting in at one of two locations on Lower Cartecay Road. Along this run is beautiful scenery and some class I-III rapids. Popular playspots along the river are the S-Turn and Blackberry Falls. Less than two miles from the put in are some biking and hiking opportunities. Six miles of (
River Loop & Red & White Trails) single track trails exist just off of Mulkey Road. These trails provide some nice views of the Cartecay River and convenience of being close to town. There is plenty of camping, cabin rentals, and lodging nearby.
Fort Mountain State Park
Just outside of Gilmer County on Chatsworth Highway lies this historical State Park. There is a 855 ft rock wall that stands on the mountain top.The wall is thought to be an old Indian Fort used as protection from other Indian tribe. But no one knows for sure, it remains a mystery.This park has a great range of outdoor activities including horseback riding, mountain biking, hiking, swimming & fishing. Hikers, Horseback Riders & Mountain Bikers alike will enjoy some of the most beautiful trails in the state.
These trails can range from rugged and steep to rolling and well groomed. There are 14 miles of hiking trails, 27 miles of mountain biking, and 25 miles of horseback riding. A 17 acre lake opens the door for swimming, fishing and pedal boating.
