| Vogel State Park - One of Georgia's Oldest & Most Popular State Parks, Vogel is located at the base of Blood Mountain in the Chattahoochee National Forest. Driving from the south, visitors pass through Neel's Gap, a beautiful mountain pass near Brasstown Bald, the highest point in Georgia. Neel's Gap is one of 6 mountain passes in the popular 6 Gap Century Bike Event that is staged every September. Vogel is frequented often during the fall when the leaves change color. Hikers can choose from a variety of trails including the four mile Bear Hair Gap loop, an easy 1 mile Lake Loop, or the challenging 13 mile Coosa Backcountry Trail. With 35 cottages, 103 campsites and primitive backpacking sites the park provides a nice range of overnight accomadations. | ||||||||||||
| Lake Nottely - Lake Nottely is a 4,180 acre TVA Reservoir in Union County. The lakes relatively fertile water supports a diverse fish community. The most popular species are largemouth bass, spotted bass, crappie and striped bass. The Marina provides canoe, fishing, and pontoon boat rentals which can enhance your fishing or outdoor experience. Camping is available at the reservoir, along with beaches for swimming and leisure time. Lake Nottely provides many excellent opportunities for scenic and wildlife viewing. | ||||||||||||
| Hiking- Union County has an abundance of long hikes through its mountains. Atop Neels Gap on HWY 129, the Appalachian Trail passes through. This location has great views of the mountains. *The Appalachian Trail, as well as other mountain trails can have some very demanding terrain. It is advised that begginner hikers seek the expertise and knowledge of veteran hikers or guides.* From atop Neels Gap you can follow the A.T. south on a 6.8 hike to Woody Gap, or north on a 11.5 mile hikeon up to Hogpen Gap. Either will provide you with a fantastic and challenging A.T. experience. The 30 mile Duncan Ridge Trail starts at Three Forks in Fannin County and shares the same footpath as the Benton MacKaye until it ends on Hwy 60. The Duncan Ridge Trail continueson til its destination in Union County on Slaughter Gap. For a longer hike the DRTcan be made into a 60 mile loop combining it with the A.T. to return back to Three Forks. Slaughter Creek Trail is a shorter 5.4 mile roundtrip hike. At mile 2.7 you will reach the A.T. and then follow your footsteps back 2.7 miles to the trailhead. |

| Horseback Riding- In Blairsville, A Step Above Stables offersgreat riding for all, including children and groups. Ride times range from 1 hour and up to 2 1/2 hours. You will follow a guide though forest trails of which some areas overlook beautiful Lake Nottely. While there is a guide provided, you can choose an easy walking pace for the entire trail or experience the smooth and quickened gate of a the walking horse. | Union County Waterfalls Helton Creek Falls- From Blairsville, its an 11 mile drive on US 129 just past Vogel State Park. The Falls have 100 feet vertical drop. High Shoals Falls- A total of five falls leading into each other make up this 300 ft. drop. Located on FS 283 at the High Shoals Scenic Area. DeSoto Falls- Five awesome falls on a 3 mile stretch of the Desoto Falls Trail. Apprx. 300 ft. drop total. These falls are located in the Desoto Falls Recreation Area. |
